My top 3 rums for 2018 are:

Worthy Park Single Estate 2006

This rum was a flavour bomb. Aromas of fig and plum and baking spices and the flavours that keep delivering.. caramel, citrus and a some overripe banana finish. A bit of funk and you’ve got yourself a hot but smooth rum. It has the perfect level of intensity. While all of the worthy park estate runs and cask finished rums are fantastic in their own right, this one stands tall and above the rest. If only we could get this in Canada!

Doorly’s 14 Year

Doorly’s knocks it out of the park with this rum. 14yrs bourbon cask with some Madeira cask blended in. It’s intense and tastes like a Velier release, at a fraction of the cost. A very well balanced sipping rum with big flavours, spicy and a lingering finish. This is fantastically priced for those looking to get into the Velier or equivalent level of rum can easily get a similar experience here and feel great about it. My only problem is finding more bottles of this on my side of the Atlantic!

Chairman’s Reserve Master Selection Martin Cate Edition

A private cask limited selection available in 2018 but only partially available to us in 2019, this bold Chairman’s selection from Martin Cate of the famed Smuggler’s Cove bar in San Fransisco. At 6 years, in bourbon casks, it’s got some youth and some spice and intensity. Coming from the John Dore 1 pot still, this was the release from Chairman’s Reserve I was looking for. Bolder strength, more pot still heavy and intensity in the glass. Flavour and aromas of ginger, spices, and a little bit of that pot still note that seems muted on the other chairman’s reserve releases. Rare and limited…. More of this please!!!!
